What is the standard height of a kitchen countertop?

The ideal height of a kitchen countertop is usually between 85 cm and 95 cm, depending on the height of the person who will use it more frequently.

A general rule is that the countertop must be at approximately hip height or slightly below the elbow when the user is standing and relaxed. For greater precision:

  • People of short stature (less than 1.60 m): 85 cm
  • Average height (1.60 - 1.75 m): 90 cm
  • High people (more than 1.75 m): 95 cm or more

The height of the countertop, will also influence the position of the plugs, countertops or high furniture , so, indirectly, the height of the countertop will influence the measures of the kitchen furniture , even in the height of the stools.

Ideal depth of a kitchen countertop: an ergonomic and functional approach

The depth of a kitchen countertop, that is, the measure from the front to the wall or background, is a key factor in the ergonomic design. It directly affects the comfort, accessibility and functionality of the work space.

1. Standard depth: 60 cm

This measure is considered the standard in most residential kitchens for several practical and ergonomic reasons:

It allows perfect integration with low furniture, which usually has a depth of 60 cm , which facilitates the installation of integrated appliances such as ovens, dishwasher and integration fridges.

The scope of an average person along a flat countertop, without stretching uncomfortably, is about 55–60 cm , so this depth ensures that it can be done comfortably, cleanly clean and reach plugs, utensils or spices placed in the background without excessive effort.

It also reserves a useful space in the rear of the countertop (about 5–10 cm) to install plugs, lighting or a small gutter for accessories (specieros, carriers, etc.) without sacrificing work surface.

2. Optimal depth: 65–70 cm

When the space allows, expanding the depth of the countertop between 65 and 70 cm can provide clear advantages:

More useful work area , which is especially valuable if the kitchen is the heart of the house or if it is often cooked as a couple or family.

Increase the safety distance between the cooking and the edge, preventing pots or pans from standing out.

Although depth is gained, this measure is still within the ergonomic range of the extended arm , so it is still comfortable for most people (even for lower statures).

It facilitates the design of less invasive furniture, since a deeper countertop allows them to place them a little higher and further back without losing accessibility.

3. More than 70 cm: only in specific cases

Overcoming the 70 cm deep is only recommended in certain configurations:

Islands or peninsulas , where access is made on both sides. In these cases, an 80–90 cm countertop is common, especially if it includes a lower bar or storage zone.

Kitchens without high furniture on the wall , since a very deep countertop with higher furniture can make them out of reach, generating an uncomfortable or even dangerous experience when trying to access them.
